In Loving Memory

Catherine O’Hara

March 6, 1954 — January 30, 2026

Catherine O’Hara was a Canadian-American actress and comedian whose extraordinary career spanned over five decades. Best known to Schitt’s Creek fans as the unforgettable Moira Rose, she brought an unmatched level of artistry, humor, and heart to the role—creating one of the most beloved characters in television history. Her portrayal earned her the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2020, part of the show’s historic sweep.

Beyond Schitt’s Creek, O’Hara was celebrated for her work in iconic films including Home Alone, Beetlejuice, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind, and as a legendary member of the SCTV cast. She was a six-time Canadian Screen Award winner and received the Order of Canada in 2018.

Catherine passed away on January 30, 2026, at the age of 71, at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California, from a pulmonary embolism caused by underlying rectal cancer. On March 1, 2026, she posthumously won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor for The Studio. Seth Rogen accepted on her behalf, saying:

“She showed that you could be a genius and you could be kind.”
